Guildford February 2024 Circle Meeting

The 770th meeting of the Guildford Catenians took place on Wednesday 7th February at Clandon Regis Golf Club. There were thirty five Guildford brothers in attendance together with one visiting brother and one visiting gentleman. The Clergy was represented by Fr Tristan.

The meeting opened with a special prayer for the recovery of the King and the Princess of Wales led by Deacon Bro. Michael Phillips. Bro. President then asked for prayers for the repose of the souls of Bro. Stephen Rowden’s sister Pamela and former Guildford brother Gerry Newell both of whom died in January.

Bro. President welcomed the visitors: Bro. Mark Hillas of Epsom Circle and Visiting Gentleman, Stephen Mainardis. Bro. Mark then replied on the visitors behalf.

Next on the agenda, was the enrolment of Carlos Silva to the Guildford Circle which was followed by dinner. Afterwards, several brothers gave their impressions and memories of visits to the Holy Land and Fr Tristan also spoke on the subject.

Finally, due to the increased cost of wine at Clandon Regis golf Club, Council decided that the Circle should purchase wine for the meetings and other events in advance. This has resulted in a welcome discount.

To ensure the future smooth operation of wine purchase the post of Wine Monitor has been created. The Wine Monitor is responsible for overseeing the distribution of wine to the tables and ensuring that all wine ordered by brothers is paid for. At the February meeting and under the Wine Monitor's watchful eye, one bottle of Merlot was purchased throughout the entire evening resulting in the princely sum of £21.00 being owed. This was divided amongst three participating brothers making an easily calculable amount of £7.00 each!

One bottle containing approximately six glasses of wine shared amongst three brothers works out at two glasses each at a very reasonable cost of £3.50 a glass!

Guildford Catenians Hog the Hog's Back!

The Guildford Catenians held its first social event of 2024 at the Ramada Hog's Back Hotel on Thursday 18th January. For those who may be unfamiliar with the venue, it is situated, would you believe, on the Hog's Back and is equidistant to both Farnham and Guildford. Long serving brothers may remember that the Guildford Circle held its monthly meetings here for many years before moving to the Guildford Golf Club in 2003.

The event was well attended with a head count of over forty Guildford brothers and ladies. Initially, everyone congregated in the bar for a catch-up/chit-chat moving later to their dinner places in the ballroom. There was strictly no dancing!
