On Saturday 1st June 2019, twenty brothers and ladies plus ten St Pius
parishioners attended a special Catholic Mass in Winchester Cathedral.The Mass was one of four permitted per year to be said in the
Anglican Cathedral. The visit was facilitated by James Lewis, a past-parishioner of St Pius Church in Merrow and now a Seminarian at Allen Hall Seminary of the Diocese of Westminster. Also in the
party were James' parents Elizabeth and Howel Lewis.
Mass is usually said in the Lady Chapel however, on this visit, the Chapel was unavailable. Mass was, therefore, exceptionally said at the High Alter by Father Mark Hogan from the Hampshire Downs Roman Catholic Parish Church of St Peter and the Winchester Martyrs in Winchester. During the Mass, James played the clarinet and assisted by his mother Elizabeth, Deacon Martin McElroy and Jeanine McElroy, Mozart's Ave Verum Corpus was sung.
After Mass, Mrs Pat Thornhill an official Cathedral Guide and a St Peter's parishioner together with other guides, gave the party a special tour of the Cathedral. It was then time for a stroll back to St Peter's Church Hall where Sarah Culhane, a parisioner of St Peter's Church, had prepared a most delicious lunch. The party was welcomed by Brother Mike Gretton, Charity Officer of the City of Westminster Circle and Grace was said by James Lewis. After lunch John Thornhill, Archivist of St Peter's, gave the party a guided tour of the Church before it was time to take the coach back to Guildford.
